Sometimes, it takes a surprisingly long time. I once had two males that wouldn't go near each other. Then, after six years, they suddenly started preening each other.

Whether two males get along depends on how much room they have. They may have compete for dominance. That usually means shrieking at each other and dive-bombing each other without any physical contact, but the struggle can make any human caught in the middle feel like a UN observer.
