Except in extreme cases, you can't tell by smelling how fresh seeds are. Try sprouting the seed in water. If you don't get sprouts in 24 hours, then it's too old and should be thrown out.

Parrots love foraging, so this is a great way to amuse him.
Whether he will overeat depends on his character. A lot of nandays do, because they have the mentality of a human toddler and just get greedy. But I have known several who eat sensibly. |
