| Message: | I purchased or I should say rescued a Nanday several months ago when I attended a bird auction. The birds this seller had were not in good shape and I actually bought the nanday as my attempt to rescue him from further neglect as I can only conclude that this was the reason behind his state.
He (not yet DNA tested)limped around in a little box and had very poor feathering and some areas with no feathers at all.
Now several months later his feathers have grown in almost completely with the exception of his neck. Only recently has he started eating when holding food in his foot. He wasn't able to hold it on his own before. He his now secure enough to take food from my hand but is still somewhat frightened and moves away if I have no food. His cage is open almost all the time and he has been coming out maybe once a week for the past month. He always stays on top though. He did come up on my hand once on his own as he had flown down from his cage after being startled. I immediately allowed him to go back to his cage (didn't want to push my luck). I know he doesn't like other birds as I have a maroon bellied conure and a quaker and he displayed aggressive behavior towards them. He's never done that to me though. I don't want to push him too much and we are building trust together but I'd like to take our relationship to the next level:-) Would appreciate any tips on gradually having him step up without risking the trust we have built so far. tks |
