Harley would not go in his cage since the first day I brought him home (3/4 years ago).  His first family put him in the basement because - as you all know - he screamed all the time.  Once in the basement he got so lonely by the time I got him that he looked like a little porcupine.  He stopped grooming himself.  Shortly after Harley and I somehow  developed “his bed” within the first week he was with me.  He loves his bed
